Alexander Slobodyanik turned out to be a “non-competitive” pianist. In Warsaw, in Warsaw, at the Chopin Competition Slobodianik won the seventh prize, in 1966, at the Tchaikovsky Competition, the fourth. Years of study

Childhood Alexander Slobodyanik passed in the city of Lviv. The first music lessons began there. The boy grew up in a musical family, and took his first pianistic steps under the supervision of his mother. A little later, the boy was sent to music school. A talented young man quickly made progress, participated in major concerts, performed at the Philharmonic. At fourteen, Alexander Slobodyanik already performed Beethoven’s Third Concert.

Seeing the young man as having great creative potential, his parents decided to transfer him to Moscow, to the Central Music School at the Conservatory. For a while Slobodyanik studied with Sergei Leonidovich Dizhur, and a little later he became a student of Neigauz himself.

However, Slobodyanik did not succeed in regular and fruitful studies with Heinrich Gustavovich. A pianist from God, Slobodyanik did not consider it necessary to trouble himself with lengthy pursuits. With the self-discipline of the young musician, things did not matter. The youthful musical successes of Slobodyanik were the result of natural giftedness. He was used to winning with the power of his talent, and therefore he practiced irregularly and unevenly, according to his mood. And Henry Gustavovich Neigauz was not surprised by one talent: he was used to seeing young people capable and motivated to study around him.

Neigauz demanded from his students composure and discipline, a developed sense of responsibility, due readiness for each lesson. Slobodyanik did not want to meet these requirements. He missed classes, did not do much on his own.

Having moved from Lviv to Moscow, the young man was carried away by the capital's life, new impressions - this could not but affect his studies. In the end, the question arose of being expelled from the conservatory. The situation was resolved by transferring Slobodyanik to the class of a young teacher Vera Gornostaeva. In one of the interviews, Slobodianik himself admits that he really regrets the imminent separation from Neuhaus, that he managed to take only a small part of what the teacher could and wanted to teach him.

The originality of Slobodyanik's musical pace can be considered his playing style. He was never in a hurry. Even performing virtuoso plays in which other performers like to “show off the technique”, Slobodyanik never “drove” the pace. Some critics even reproached him for retardation. The musician never lost control of himself and his emotions, he was always emphasized restrained, calm, full of dignity. Where other performers began to fuss and fall into exaltation, Slobodyanik remained majestic and significant.

Some of the critics called the originality of the performance of Alexander Slobodyanik “Slavic intonation”. There is something inexplicably Russian and sincere in his game. This is probably why Slobodianik so well managed the works of Russian composers. He played a lot of Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninov, Prokofiev.

The foreign audience has always especially warmly received the pianist precisely at those concerts where he performed Russian music. He knew that at any moment he could lose something, “stumble”. Therefore, he liked to play works of large forms, where small flaws are not as noticeable as in miniatures.

It’s not by chance that Slobodyanik loved large-scale works. In them, he felt calm and confident. His piano technique was such that “close-up virtuosity” came out unusually beautiful. But Slobodyanik had problems with small equipment. The reason for this is the specific anatomy of the hands or the flaws and omissions of youth - not for us to judge.

At Slobodyanik's concerts, one could observe the differences in inspiration characteristic of him. In one evening, brilliant and colorful rooms could be combined with completely expressionless and inert. The musician seemed to lose interest in what was happening, “fell asleep”, went into himself. And after a few minutes, he suddenly lit up with creative energy, became enthusiastic and confident.

Perhaps this creative instability Slobodaika can be attributed to the shortcomings. And yet - a living person is not capable, cannot constantly dispose of his inspiration, call it at the right moment and “turn it off” as unnecessary. The lively, immediate, momentary work of a musician is so valuable because his emotional impulses have always been sincere and pure.

Sunset career

Over time, Slobodyanik began to give fewer concerts, significantly reduced his repertoire. He performed more often in schools and music schools than in philharmonic societies. He said that the worst thing for an artist is the indifference of the public, and there are no indifferent people in music schools, so playing there is always joyful and pleasant.

“Even in“ unsanitary conditions ”you can play quite well. Yes, yes, you can, believe me. But - if only he could manage to get involved in music himself. Let this passion not come immediately, let it take 20-30 minutes to adapt to the situation. But then, when the music really captures you, when you start up, everything around you becomes indifferent, irrelevant. And then you can play very well ... "

Alexander Slobodyanik died in 2008. He was 67 years old.
